Ethiopian Coffee Regions

Ethiopia's main specialty coffee regions are Yirgacheffe, Guji, Sidamo (Sidama), Harrar and Limu. Each grows coffee at high altitude from Ethiopian heirloom varieties, but soil, rainfall and processing give each region its own cup: floral and citrus in Yirgacheffe, intensely fruity in Guji, sweet and full-bodied in Sidamo, wild and wine-like in Harrar, and balanced and spicy in Limu.

Buna Utopia imports Grade 1 coffee directly from three of these regions: Yirgacheffe, Guji and Sidamo. This page explains where each region is, how its coffee tastes, and which of our coffees come from it.

Yirgacheffe

Yirgacheffe is a small district in the Gedeo Zone and the best-known name in Ethiopian coffee. Its high farms and cool nights produce delicate, floral cups with bright citrus acidity. Washed Yirgacheffe is clean and tea-like; natural Yirgacheffe adds blueberry and stone fruit. It shines in pour-over and light roasts. Read the full Yirgacheffe coffee guide.

Guji

Guji sits in the Oromia region, bordering Sidama and Gedeo. For years much Guji coffee was sold under the Sidamo name; today it is one of Ethiopia's most sought-after origins in its own right. Guji naturals are intensely aromatic, with blackberry, jasmine and ripe stone fruit. Read the full Guji coffee guide.

Sidamo (Sidama)

Sidamo is the traditional coffee name for the Sidama area, which became its own regional state in 2020, so you will see both spellings. Sidamo coffees are sweeter and fuller-bodied than Yirgacheffe, with berry and chocolate notes, and roast well from light to medium-dark. Read the full Sidamo coffee guide.

Harrar

Harrar coffee grows in Ethiopia's eastern highlands, far from the southern regions above. It is almost always naturally processed and known for wild blueberry, wine and cocoa flavors. Read the Harrar coffee guide.

Limu

Limu is a southwestern growing area near Jimma, mostly producing washed coffee with a balanced, gently spicy and wine-like cup. It is less common in North America than the southern regions.
