Grade 1 Ethiopian Coffee
Grade 1 is the highest grade Ethiopia gives to export coffee. Ethiopian coffee is graded on two things: physical defects counted in a 300 g sample of green beans, and cup quality judged by trained tasters. Grade 1 lots allow the fewest defects (0 to 3 per 300 g) and must also score at the top of the cup evaluation. Most Ethiopian coffee sold abroad is Grade 2 or lower.
Every coffee Buna Utopia sells is Grade 1, from three regions, in two forms: roasted to order for brewing, and green for roasting yourself or for your roastery.
How Ethiopian coffee grading works
| Grade | What it means |
|---|---|
| Grade 1 | Fewest defects (0 to 3 per 300 g) and top cup quality. Specialty grade. |
| Grade 2 | Few defects and high cup quality. Also sold as specialty. |
| Grade 3 to 5 | More defects and lower cup scores. Mostly commercial coffee. |

Why Grade 1 matters in your cup
Defects such as broken, insect-damaged, sour or unripe beans add flat, bitter or fermented flavors. A Grade 1 lot has almost none, so the cup tastes clean and the origin character comes through: jasmine and citrus in Yirgacheffe, blackberry in Guji, berry and chocolate in Sidamo. For roasters, fewer defects also means more even roasts and less waste.

Frequently asked questions
What is Grade 1 Ethiopian coffee?
Grade 1 is Ethiopia's highest export grade. It allows 0 to 3 defects in a 300 g green sample and requires top cup quality.
Is Grade 1 better than Grade 2?
Grade 1 has fewer defects, so the cup is usually cleaner and more consistent. Both grades can be specialty coffee, but Grade 1 is the stricter standard.
How is Ethiopian coffee graded?
Graders count physical defects in a green sample and taste the coffee. The combined result places each lot in Grade 1 through Grade 5.
Is all Buna Utopia coffee Grade 1?
Yes. Every roasted and green coffee Buna Utopia sells is Grade 1, imported directly from Ethiopia.
